Is there any device or technique to help with urine incontinence

I'm Dr. Karyn Eilber. I'm urologist and part of plusOne's Wellness Collective. We are here to answer questions that have been submitted by the plusOne community because I specialize in urogynecology that includes treating pelvic floor issues.

I'm answering the question, which is, is there any device or technique to help with urine incontinence?

First of all, it's important to understand that not all incontinence is the same, and so they're not all treated the same. The two most common types are stress incontinence, which is physical stress, such as laughing, coughing, jumping. You know, the reason you avoid the trampoline.

And the second type is overactive bladder, which is urgency of urination and inability to control that urge without leaking urine.

Things that can help both types are behavioral changes, such as avoiding excessive fluids and bladder irritants, like alcohol or excessive caffeine, and I don't mean you have to totally avoid them just in moderation.

Also, doing kegel exercises or strengthening of the pelvic floor can help. This can be done by seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist, but you can also do it on your own with devices such as plusOne's Kegel trainer.

Tune in next week to hear the answer to another, Ask the Expert question.
