Hey, it's Dr. Betsy Greenleaf here answering questions for the plusOne community ask the expert.

And today's question is, what causes UTIs after intimacy?

Well, a urinary tract infection or a UTI can often happen during intimacy just because of the friction of that activity can push bacteria up into the urethra, which is the tube you pee through, and it can then gain access to the rest of the urinary system.

So 60% of women will have a urinary tract infection at some point in their lives. 1-2% of women can get an infection after each sexual activity, and men also, but the rates are much lower.

So how to avoid this is number one, pee after any kind of intimacy that helps to flush out the bacteria and decreases the risk of this happening.

So stick around for more great questions coming up with ask the expert because your question may be answered next.
