How can our sex life impact our overall wellness?

Video Transcript

Hi there. I'm Dr. Taylor Nolan. I'm a licensed psychotherapist and a certified sexologist. I'm here to answer questions submitted by the plusOne community.

And this question is, how can our sex life impact our overall wellness? Because of the stigma associated with sexual wellness, this isn't talked about a lot, but I'd love to encourage folks to look at orgasm as a coping mechanism. So the same as you would maybe go for a run because you're feeling anxious, because you're feeling stressed out, you can also masturbate or you can initiate sex with a consenting partner to experience that release of energy, of tension, and that can help improve your overall wellness.

Whether it's partnered play or solo play, orgasms have been found to increase our immune system functioning to reduce anxiety, and they release oxytocin and dopamine hormones in our brains that help us feel really great.

Orgasming has also been found to interestingly enough, clear your nasal passageways. So if you are sick and you are congested and stuffy, orgasming can help relieve those passageway blockages.

When we activate and engage with our sexuality, we are increasing our connections with our bodies, and that is always going to improve our overall wellness.

I hope this was helpful and be sure to follow along to see what questions I answer next.
