How can alcohol affect your sexual wellness?
Hi there. I'm Dr. Taylor Nolan, and I'm a licensed psychotherapist and a certified sexologist. And I'm here today to answer questions submitted by the plusOne community.
This question is a great question. How does alcohol affect your sexual wellness? Well, all around it can lead to difficulties and decrease in functioning. Research has shown us that increased alcohol usage can lead to difficulty in getting hard or in getting wet, so it reduces blood flow to the genital areas.
And, when you engage in sex that maybe isn't fully lubricated, that can lead to friction, which can also lead to STIs, pain, discomfort, not a fun time. It can also lead to a decrease in sensation, so it might not feel as good and you could have difficulty in orgasming. And, we want sex to feel good.
And, lastly, when you are under the influence, you are way less likely to engage in safer sex practices, and that could lead to things like an unwanted pregnancy or STIs.
I hope that this was helpful. Be sure to stay tuned to see what questions I answer next.
